NAME COMPETITION

As reflected in the headline, we now have a new name for the DES newsletter:

“EpiLines – The DES Newsletter”.

Thank you to everyone who contributed suggestions. The winning contributors are Mattias Højgaard Toftholm and Kasper Kjersgaard Mortensen, who will receive free participation at the upcoming Summer Meeting.

UPCOMING DES SUMMER MEETING AND GENERAL ASSEMBLY

We would like to remind you to register for the DES Summer Meeting, taking place on 23-24 June 2026 in Copenhagen.

The programme includes:
• The annual one-day Summer Meeting and General Assembly (23 June)
• A full-day workshop for DES members (24 June)

Registration is still open. The deadline is 14 June, with early-bird registration available until 10 May. The programme and registration details are available on the DES website: https://www.dansk-epidemiologisk-selskab.dk/

As part of the programme, this year’s workshop will focus on Bayesian approaches to statistical inference. Bayesian methods provide a framework for combining prior knowledge with new data to update our understanding.

Bayesian statistics is like everyday life: You start with what you believe, you gather experience, and you update your beliefs accordingly.

Why not apply the same approach in your professional life?

Using Bayesian methods, you can incorporate existing knowledge. It can be used to tell the probability that something is true—not just whether it's significant or not—and conclusions can be updated when your data comes in.

Bayesian statistics isn't just math; it's a way of reasoning about uncertainty that might be more aligned with how we actually want to interpret our findings.

The meeting is targeted epidemiologists who are curious about the concepts. No prerequisites or prior knowledge about Bayesian methods are required.

CALL FOR NEW BOARD MEMBERS

We would like to remind members of the opportunity to join the DES Board. Elections will take place at the General Assembly on 23 June.

As most current board members are based in the Copenhagen area, we particularly encourage epidemiologists from institutions in Northern, Western, and Southern Denmark to consider joining the DES board. You can read more about the board here: https://www.dansk-epidemiologisk-selskab.dk/om-des/bestyrelsen/ and about the DES bylaws here: https://www.dansk-epidemiologisk-selskab.dk/om-des/vedtaegter/.

The DES board is responsible for all decisions made in the society and we organize two yearly scientific meetings. The board meets approximately once a month online and additional meetings are held in subgroups as needed. All board work is unpaid, but fun! And most administrative work is handled by our amazing student assistant.

If you want to run for the DES board, please send your application to us at dansk.epidemiologisk.selskab@outlook.dk no later than three days before the General Assembly. Your application should include your name and title. At the general assembly, you will have the opportunity to provide a short presentation of yourself and why you wish to be elected for the board. If you cannot attend the general assembly, please include a short text of max 300 words in your application. We look forward to welcome new board members.

DES AUTUMN MEETING 2026 – SAVE THE DATE

We are pleased to announce that the DES Autumn Meeting will take place on 22-23 September 2026 at Nyborg Strand. This year’s meeting will focus on modern methods in epidemiology, including mediation, decomposition, and target trial emulation.

We are delighted to confirm Professor Maya Petersen (UC Berkeley) as a keynote speaker. Her work on causal inference and the Causal Roadmap has been highly influential and will offer valuable insights into transparent and rigorous approaches to causal analysis.

The programme will also feature Gemma Hammerton (Bristol Medical School), who will present on counterfactual mediation—an area of growing importance in epidemiological research.

The full programme will be released shortly.

A MEMORIAL EVENT FOR JØRN OLSEN

A memorial symposium for Jørn Olsen will be held on 24 September 2026 at Aarhus University. The programme also includes a lecture by Professor Miguel Hernán (Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health) on: “Causal estimands for clinical and regulatory decision making”

The full programme is available here:

DATA OF THE MONTH

As a new initiative, DES will highlight a Data of the Month to increase awareness of relevant data sources and strengthen the methodological knowledge base within the epidemiological community. The first data of the month is the Metropolit cohort and information is shared on LinkedIn and on the DES homepage. Please send an e-mail to dansk.epidemiologisk.selskab@outlook.dk if you know a data souse that should be ‘Data of the Month’
